Tue, 13 February 2007 ![]() Well, the political season here in the good ole US of A is heating up... already. Is it me or does this 'season' seem to be starting earlier and earlier every cycle? While Sarah and I haven't yet recorded our next show, we've been kicking around some ideas and with the flurry of Presidential bids being announced, I thought I'd throw out my two cents and see what all of you out there are thinking… As you obviously gathered by the title of this posting and the graphic, I'm going to share some thoughts on the Presidential campaign of Mitt Romney (www.mittromney.com) which he announced today, February 13, 2007. I don’t think it’s a big surprise that Mitt is LDS, right? You knew that… or did you? I actually started writing this blog post prior to his formal announcement and speculated as to how (or if, for that matter) the media would make a big deal about his LDS faith. Well, Mitt beat me to the posting and USA Today newspaper has already answered my question to some degree. I’m actually writing this post from snowed in St. Louis… and wondering if I’m going to be able to get home to Cleveland tomorrow relatively on time - one can only hope! This morning, I was very surprised to see a picture of Mitt and his Mormon faith on the cover page of the newspaper as I rolled out of bed and grabbed the paper that had been slid under my hotel door during the night. Now granted, I didn’t have any time today to watch the news on tv or gather any other sources, but that one event said to me that this will be 'an issue’ that will be discussed in the media. Let’s face it, ‘news’ has become more about sensationalism than facts (at least in my opinion) and to that end, I’m fairly certain there will not be any shortage of ‘sensational’ stories should they decide to dig into Mitt’s family history and faith. The big question is, how will Mitt address this and will this attention be a good thing or a bad thing for the LDS church? How will exaggerations or misrepresentations be addressed by church leadership? Should they be addressed by Church leadership? Now, as a voter I’m going to share some thoughts with you in the hope of generating a good and open discussion on what’s in a vote. As a general political philosophy, Sarah and I tend to side more often with Republicans than Democrats – So, I guess that makes us conservatives in nature and superseding all of that, we’re Catholics who make decisions based on principles. No, we didn’t vote for John Kerry because he’s Catholic, actually, we didn’t vote for him at all. In our opinion, he lacked personal ethics and consistency toward his faith given some of his political positions – not the lease of which is his stance on abortion! I’m sorry, but I couldn’t buy the idea that I’m Catholic, but will choose to live my (political) life in a manner inconsistent with my Catholic faith. You are the sum of all your parts – mind, body, history, faith, goals, blab la bla. Are Sarah and I the only ones who see this as a MAJOR issue of personal integrity that should carry over to one’s political career? OK, so now we have Mitt Romney in the race for the White House. True that his values are much more in line with those of Sarah and I in terms of the value of life, economic policy and the role of individuals verses ‘big government’. Great. But… there is that religion issue. Clearly Mitt would disagree with Sarah and I on the issue of who’s faith is established by God. Technically, we don’t disagree a little – we disagree a lot! Our faiths in the bluntest of terms are mutually exclusive – there is no shade of one in the other. It’s either Catholic 100% right or LDS 100% right. Either Our Lord’s Church has had an unbroken line of succession and the keys of God’s kingdom have been passed down through the Chair of Peter OR God took the keys away shortly after the death of the last of the twelve original Apostles and restored His Church through Joseph Smith… black or white …period. As a voter, I’m now presented with the question of how much I should value the personal religion of a political candidate. True, I like what he stands for on the political issues. I’m sure he’s a good, well intentioned, honest man. I’m not questioning that at all. However, after having studied and experienced the LDS religion, I have formed opinions which (if I am to be consistent in my overall principles for living my life in an integrated fashion with my religion) should also be considered with casting my support for one man. Call it what you want, I’m not bashing on Mitt or the LDS religion, but I will probably be looking for another candidate to vote for during this election season should he get the Republican nomination. I simply cannot bring myself to vote for a person who holds such different views of who God is and holds very different opinions on Christianity. I suspect this will be a major MAJOR issue has his political opponents trickle information to the media. It’s going to be interesting to see what the media picks up on and how he responds, but one thing is now clear to me – this will come up. What are your thoughts – is this a big deal to you? Do you think it will be a big deal in the media? Do you think it’s even fair for us to consider the faith of a man when choosing a leader…

I hope you make it home safely. I love the blizzard, but it can be very difficult driveing. Our work was closed yesterday and I spent a couple hours digging out our cars before the snow froze solid during the night (and I'm glad I did too). I got to spend the day with my very pregnant wife and that was really nice. Last night I battled the snowy roads to get her some chocolate. :)
Now, on to the Political ponderings...
I too did not vote for Kerry for the same reasons you mentioned. I don't think that the personal religion of a political candidate is what really matters to me. There are few questions to ask: Does he/she live the faith that he/she claims? Does the teachings of the candidate's faith pose a threat to morality and values that I hold dear?
I think this next election season is going to not only brutal, but it is going to be hard to find a candidate that shares my morals and values. Oh and I totally agree that they are starting way too early on this thing. I wonder if this is a political strategy on the part of the Democratic Party.
Another thing besides Religion that will play a part is sex and race. I'm not voting for Senator Clinton, because she's a women, but because I think she sees the world upside down. I can't bring myself to believe a word she says. She will try to play both sides as well as the middle. And I do not have a problem with voting for a black candidate as long as it is not Barack Obama. I would most definitely vote for Colin Powell if he were to run, but that isn't going to happen. Oboma is very camera friendly and I think he will get a lot of votes. My point is that I hate it when the other side tries to make it about race, sex, and religion instead of what the candidate really stands for.
This brings me to the Republicans. Too many of the soon to be candidates for the Republican Party is on the opposite side of the fence on many of the values that are important to me. It seams that the right has shifted too far to the middle and even to the left and the right is moving further to the right, but posing to be in the middle, and here I sit alone (or so it seams). It would be nice if there were presidential candidates whom were honest about what they believe in and stand for (and actually stand for these beliefs instead of playing the political game). But this would mean that the candidate would have to be a man of dignity and well grounded, which is hard to come by these days.
May God Bless America
Being a practicing Catholic and knowing how the LDS operate and the polarization of beliefs, I could not, in good conscious, vote for a mormon, regardless of the perceived strength of their character or how close their values meet mine. I find it a serious flaw for anyone who professes in the LDS faith given the extremely questionable nature of their doctrine and the silliness of their theology. How can we entrust the future of our country to someone who takes LDS theology serious?
This last statement aside, Romney has done more to distance himself from the LDS WITHOUT actually renouncing it. I am not sure what is worse, someone who professes to be a Mormon, or one who professes to be a believer of a faith in which he is reluctant to defend.
Not that I am much of a Bush fan, but I am convinced that, regardless of his actions, he is not bashful about admitting that the work of Christianity and God plays a part in his presidency and life. I admire those who seek the guidance of God and takes actions consistent with that message.
I wonder if Romney believes he will be living on the planet Kolob with his wife in the afterlife? I can't wait for this question to be posed to him...
Like any true political figure, he maintains his composure and responded in a 'higher road' manner ultimately bringing his followers to their feet with his response. I'd be curious to know just what percentage of people in that room truly understand to core belief in God of the LDS Church and how it is a significant departure from mainstream Christianity. ...then again, I wonder (sadly) how many would care? Would it make a difference if the candidate prayed to Buddha or Allah? How different is praying to 'Jesus Christ', if that person you're praying to is not the 'same' interpretation of Jesus Christ (referring to the Trinitarian Christian understanding) that mainstream Christianity would pray to? Well, the name is the same - they must be the same, right? ahhh... no. I'm sure we'll see many more examples of these theological challenges during his campaign.
There was an article today on Catholic Exchange's website today about Mitt Romney and his Mormonism. I will post the link below.

Issues...
Taxes
I have long championed both lower taxes and reform of the existing tax system, and recently signed the Americans for Tax Reform pledge to oppose all tax increases. Much of our recent economic prosperity is directly attributable to the lower taxes enacted by recent Congresses. I believe America’s tax code is overly complex and burdensome. Americans spend roughly $157 billion each year in tax preparation, to ensure they do not run afoul of the Internal Revenue Service. The system is desperately in need of reform. I support a flat tax concept that simplifies tax preparation, applies a low tax rate to all Americans, and respects the special financial burden carried by American families raising children.
Social Security
The Social Security System is facing a demographic crisis that will someday affect the financial viability of the Social Security Trust Fund. Projections for the financial solvency of the Trust Fund show that as baby boomers begin to enter retirement there will be an increase in the number of people drawing social security benefits, and yet a corresponding decrease in the number of working people who provide those benefits. Clearly, this will present a crisis within the system. We must firmly resolve to keep our commitment to current retirees and those preparing to retire. Further, we must modernize the system to ensure that Social Security is financially sound for our children. I believe every American has a stake in this debate, and I will continue to keep the dialogue open as we work toward a solution.
Energy
Due to years of neglect and short-sighted domestic policies, America is on the verge of an energy crisis. Our supply of energy has not kept pace with our demand. Today our nation produces 39% less oil than we did in 1970. This leaves us dependent on foreign suppliers, who often do not have America’s best interests at heart. In the last Congress, I co-sponsored the Vehicle and Fuel Choices for America Security Act. This bill aims to reduce our oil consumption by 2.5 million barrels per day in ten years by taking an innovative, market-based approach that relies on advanced technology and an expansion of renewable fuels. I will continue to fight for energy independence.
Marriage
I believe that our society’s strength lies in its most fundamental building block, the family unit. Family begins with marriage. We must defend the institution of marriage by defending the definition of marriage. The right to marry is not the right to redefine marriage. Marriage is the union of one man and one woman.
How we define marriage is vitally important because of the message it sends to the culture—to the young, and to the next generation of citizens. Make no mistake, a society that undermines marriage and the family is undermining itself, and a government that attempts to supplant rather than to support the family and marriage is bent on its own destruction.
We must recognize that it is our families, built upon the institution of marriage, that are the fundamental and essential centers of commitment and care that have the real power to transform our society.
Human Rights
My belief in the value of human life is what inspired my concern over the international genocides taking place in countries like Darfur. I traveled to Darfur and Rwanda in early 2006 to see firsthand the tragedies that have taken place there. The suffering was unlike any I have ever seen. I believe that we must show compassion to these people. America is a great nation, and we have a role to play in protecting innocent life at home and abroad.
Reforming the UN
The United Nations continues to be the subject of great controversy. The U.N. has been instrumental in resolving a number of international disputes, and its work should not go unnoticed. However, it too often couples lofty ideals with poor execution. As such, reforming the U.N. must remain a priority. In the 104th Congress I supported the National Security Revitalization Act, which prohibited U.S. military forces from being placed under U.N. command and control in most situations. Further, it provided for the U.S. to be reimbursed for participation in U.N. peacekeeping operations. I believe we should reduce the size of the U.N., and that the U.S. should bear less of the organization’s financial burden. I have long supported - and will continue to support - efforts to condition our country’s U.N. dues on substantive U.N. reform.
Culture and Values
We must clean up America’s culture, beginning in every home. A new callousness can be seen on our television sets and movie theaters, in video games and on magazine racks. While parents remain the first line of defense in the fight to protect our children from inappropriate media content, some of the responsibility for this effort also rests with the producers and distributors of modern media. With this in mind, I introduced the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2006 and was pleased to see the President sign it into law. The Act increased fines on broadcast networks that air obscene and indecent material during the hours children are most likely to be watching. Shielding our children from the violence, obscenity, and indecency in today’s media continues to be one of my top priorities. I have also introduced a bill that would promote greater accuracy and transparency in the rating of video games. Accurately educating parents about the content of the media they bring into their homes is a key part of this process.
In addition to these threats, I remain concerned about the proliferation of pornography in our culture. The commoditization of the human person through pornography is a scourge upon our civilization and one of the most insidious threats to the stability of our families. I held a hearing in 2006 where we examined the detrimental effect pornography has on children and families. I will continue the fight to protect families from a variety of cultural threats.
New Homestead Act
Over 140 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Homestead Act, landmark legislation that helped populate rural areas in the Great Plains.
I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of a bill that presents the same opportunity today for those willing to make a 5-year commitment to live and work in rural America. The New Homestead Act would help pay back college loans, provide a $5,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers and pump much needed capital into our Main Streets in rural communities across America.
This country has faced chronic out-migration before. In the 1970s, metropolitan urban cores across America were suffering from out-migration similar to what we are seeing today in rural America. Tax incentives were put in place to enhance economic development and it revitalized our nation’s urban cores. It worked back in the 1970s for the urban core and it can work again today for rural America. We are simply looking to do for rural America what we have already done for the urban core of America.
Growing up on a farm near Parker, Kansas, I saw firsthand that communities in rural America exhibit the values and work ethic we all appreciate as Americans. We must act now to preserve the ‘small town’ lifestyles that have been so vital to our country’s success.
Iraq
After my recent trip to Iraq, I am even more convinced that the situation there is precarious, but hopeful. I see hope in the Iraqi people. I believe this hope will be the foundation of a new Iraqi society. Much remains to be done, and I think we need a plan to turn this country over to its citizens. I will continue to work with the leaders in our country, as well as leaders in Iraq, to find a solution that protects the future of Iraq, and the pride and dignity of its citizens.
Agriculture
During my time as Secretary of Agriculture in Kansas, I saw firsthand the issues faced by today’s farmers. Clean air and water continue to be of top importance, as are the costs of fertilizer and other supplies. America must support the efforts of the agriculture industry, so that it can continue to supply a safe and economical food supply. I believe in agriculture innovation and remain committed to efforts that will help enable farmers to embrace the production of biofuels such as ethanol. I will continue to support America’s agriculture industry by bolstering rural communities and the efforts of America’s farmers.
Judicial Reform
The role of a judge is to interpret the law, not to create it. Too many judges fail to remember the importance of this distinction. In recent years, activist judges around the country have been sidestepping state legislatures and the will of the voters, nullifying laws based not on the Constitution, but rather their own political agenda. The Senate must act to help prevent more activists from taking the bench. Government functions best when it is most accountable to the people. That is why I believe laws should be made by elected officials, and not by the federal judiciary. I will continue to support judges who adopt this philosophy.
Gun Rights/Second Amendment
At the heart of the Bill of Rights is the Second Amendment. This Amendment guarantees an individual the right to keep and bear arms, which is essential, as the Amendment itself affirms, to “the security of a free state.? Restrictive gun control laws aimed at weakening this constitutional right are not the answer. Instead, it is important for the government to enforce criminal gun laws already on the books, for communities to stand against gun violence, and for parents to teach children about gun safety.
Religious Liberty
Religion, once an integral part of our society, is today being eradicated from nearly every aspect of public life. The First Amendment protects the freedom to practice the religion of one’s choice. That freedom is under attack by groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, who profit financially from lawsuits brought against cities and towns that display religious symbols. The ACLU and others have collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees from suits brought against local cities and towns. Now they are using those victories to threaten other local jurisdictions. I introduced the Public Expression of Religion Act last year to prevent groups like the ACLU from collecting attorneys’ fees in religious freedom cases. Our country was founded on the idea that its citizens should be free to express their religious beliefs without government interference. I will continue the fight to protect that freedom.
Life
Life is worthy of respect and protection from the moment of conception. I fear that our society has forgotten the value of human life. I believe every life has meaning and purpose, and that the termination of life is taken too lightly in our country today. Abortion ends a human life. It destroys an individual who could have lived, worked, and contributed to our society. And has wiped out nearly an entire generation. I believe we should strive to fully embrace a culture of life through our national politics. I will continue to fight to protect life at every stage. I hope that one day America will remember the value we once placed on human life.
Education
When we ignore poorly performing schools, we also ignore every student in those schools, thereby allowing an achievement gap to persist. It is imperative that we close the achievement gap and provide our nation’s students with a productive learning environment that challenges and encourages intellectual stimulation. I believe that providing for choice in education is beneficial to student achievement. For years now, we have seen studies that prove school choice programs, such as the new Opportunity Scholarships recently implemented in the District of Columbia, have a drastic and positive impact on students—especially minority students. By supporting such initiatives, we will be ensuring that more students have access to a high quality education, which means that they will have a better chance of success in not only reaching college, but flourishing in life.
I am a Mormon. My best friend in the world is a practicing Catholic. He's a liberal Democrat Catholic. I'm a conservative Republican Mormon. I’m confident that when he will read your piece, he too will concur that your opinion is bigoted.
I was raised in the Bible Belt as a Protestant. I know what it's like being a religious minority. When I joined the Church, I’m confident that had I stripped naked and run down Main street, I would have incurred less wrath than I did when I joined the Church.
It was not until I joined the LDS Church that I attended my first Catholic Mass and have attended many since then. I served a mission for the Church in France, the bastion of Catholicism. I feel perfectly at home in a magnificent cathedral or a small village parish. I’ve maintained relationships with dear Catholics friends who invited me into their homes, asked me questions about my beliefs, and lovingly we’ve continued to disagree on doctrine. But never have any of those wonderful people attached my beliefs, but have respected them; and I they beliefs. Instead, our friendships are based on our shared common core values that overwhelm our differences on doctrine. The same holds true for my Islamic friends as well. Even a few atheists and agnostics thrown in there over the years.
Yes there are those who have attached my beliefs. And clearly they are bigots. And they miss out on the wonderful relationships that we could have had because they’ve chosen to judge me. I sorrow for them.
Judging from what I've read so far on your blog, your wife is former LDS. So the two of you disagree with our beliefs...strongly! From your statement about Mitt's view of his religion, it appears that you consider yourself to be intellectually superior and more competent to ascertain truth from error than Mitt, and therefore have chosen to ascertain that he’s incompetent to be president simply because he’s unable to recognize the depth of his stupidity about Mormonism. My friend, that is bigotry.
Nice as you and your beautiful family appear to be, I’m reminded of the photograph of a gathering of pleasantly dressed, smiling young white folks in Georgia having a picnic just after they had passed judgment and had hanged a couple black people. They looked like nice enough people with the smiles on their faces and their celebratory atmosphere of happiness; except for one problem: there were the bodies of black people hanging in trees behind them.
I am always amazed when individuals start considering themselves superior enough to put down someone else's belief systems, religions, and cultural differences. Generally they do so from a position of not knowing the depth of their ignorance. When people think they are wise enough to openly judge another’s religious beliefs, truly wise people recognize that’s a dangerous area from which to start throwing rocks at other peoples values.
Personally, I recognize that I am very limited intellectually compared to the vast body of knowledge there is to learn about in this wonderful journey called mortality. I'll simply choose to make decisions for myself. If I feel those decisions can have benefit for my neighbor, I will offer to share what I've discovered. Over the years, many have listened, asked, and have made life changing decisions accordingly. Most have listened and have chosen to disagree on points of doctrine, period. We continue to walk together on the platform of shared values that results of valid belief, albeit different belief systems. Some have chosen to critisize me and my beliefs. They choose not to share common values with me. I heart aches for them for the wonderful opportunities missed for the opportunity to “love thy neighbor?. It’s very difficult to convince someone that you love them when your condemning them to Hell for their beliefs.
Hell will freeze over before I will attach another man's integrity, trustworthiness or decency on the basis of his affiliation with a major world belief system, unless of course he or she openly declares that they are a follower of Satan. I may privately examine and question his or her integrity, trustworthiness and decency from their actions. I then choose whether or not to walk with them. But unless they are seeking to limit my freedom, I will honor and defend their right to their belief system, values, opinions and not place myself above them sufficiently to where I can attack their belief system. To do so would be to buy into bigotry.
If our common core values overlap enough to my belief that they will defend those same rights for me, I will follow and vote for them in elected office as my Protestant parents did for John Kennedy.
I might mention to you that my liberal Catholic friend is seriously examining Mitt Romney because of his overlapping common values, those same values to bind us together so much as dear friends. Yes we agree doctrinally and politically a lot of the time. But we agree totally on our shared values and I would trust him with my life without a second thought.
I encourage you to seriously consider the potential for lost opportunities of friendship and growth from the missed fellowship of association with brothers and sisters of similar core values that are lost when one chooses to publicly question or belittle that person’s beliefs. If you are not a Mormon, I would like to suggest that you remove that term that I hold dear from your website and blog.
I wish the best for you and your beautiful family.
Who is the #1 Republican in the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire? What would you guys do if Fred Thompson chose Mitt as his running mate, or vice versa? Throw out the baby with the bath water?
Fortunately, only the extreme religionists unreconizing their fellowship with the Islamo facists brothers in arms who war against this country take such bigoted opinions. Just because you are many doesn't mean your right. Heaven help us when you are victorious!
I might remind you of the 13th chapter of Nephi in the book of mormon, which characterizes the Catholic church as the church from satan. I might also point out that your beloved mormon apostle, Orsan Pratt, blatantently espouses, without any refute from the LDS fold, that the Catholic and Protestant Churchs are the "Whores of Babylon". Look it up.
If that is not bigotry, I don't know what is!! If you are looking at who is throwing stones, look at your own hand. This IS YOUR FAITH!! Can you point to any official LDS stance that refutes this stance? I haven't found any LDS apologist that can.. Give it a try. I would like to know. Most just ignore this inquiry, how 'bout you? You up for it?
The theological problem then presents itself, if you believe this stance to be untrue, then you cannot do so without refuting Joseph Smith and his followers. Something that loyal followers can't, and won't do. You included?
The problem with your arguement above is that there is nothing in the Catholic faith, teachings, dogma, creed nor catechism that supports, promotes nor endorses the racial bigotry that you describe. In fact, I don't know of any message on this site that does?
It is too bad that you feel that everyone who disagrees with your belief are bigots (your paragraph 5). Look at your paragraph 10. It is in complete contradiction to your statement in paragraph 5.
I hope you can find some peace in your search. Look at the message and then look at the messenger. Not everyone is a bigot and nobody is Satan. All are children of God.
